What is Back-Rank Mate?
Chess Terms : Back-Rank Mate Explained
A back-rank mate is a checkmate delivered by a rook or queen along the opponent's back rank (first or eighth rank), where the king is trapped by its own pieces—typically pawns on the second rank that block its escape. It is one of the most common tactical patterns in chess and arises when a player neglects to create a luft (escape square) for the king. Back-rank mates are particularly frequent in games between less experienced players but can also occur at the highest levels when defenders are overloaded.
