Break

A break (or pawn break) is a pawn advance that disrupts the opponent's pawn structure and opens lines for pieces. Breaks are essential for generating activity in closed positions and for challenging the opponent's spatial control. Typical breaks include ...c5 against a d4 centre, ...d5 in many opening structures, and ...f5 in King's Indian positions.
