Building a bridge is an endgame technique, most commonly associated with the Lucena position, in which the stronger side constructs a shelter for the king using the rook to shield it from checks. By placing the rook on a middle rank, the king can advance safely to support pawn promotion. The "bridge" is one of the most fundamental endgame techniques.
