What is Castling Rights?

Castling rights refer to a player's legal ability to castle. A player loses castling rights permanently if the king moves, or on one side if the corresponding rook moves. Castling rights are recorded in FEN notation. Preserving castling rights is often strategically important, as castling provides king safety and rook activation.
