Development

Development is the process of moving pieces from their starting squares to more active positions where they control key squares and can participate in the game. Rapid, efficient development is a fundamental opening principle. A player who completes development first typically holds the initiative. Undeveloped pieces—particularly those still on the back rank—are contributing nothing to the position.
