What is File?

Chess Terms : File Explained

File

A file is a vertical column of eight squares on the chessboard, designated by letters a through h. Files are named after their letter: the a-file, b-file, and so on. Rooks operate primarily along files. Files may be open, closed, or half-open depending on the pawn configuration.
