King

The king is the most important piece in chess—the entire object of the game is to checkmate the opposing king. The king can move one square in any direction. Despite its limited mobility, the king becomes an active and powerful piece in the endgame. The king has special moves: castling (with a rook) and the obligation not to move into check.
