What is Material?

Chess Terms : Material Explained

Material

Material refers to the pieces and pawns a player has on the board. Standard piece values are: queen = 9, rook = 5, bishop = 3, knight = 3, pawn = 1. A player with more total piece value has a "material advantage." See also the Exchange.
