What is Opening?

An opening is the initial phase of a chess game, typically the first 10–20 moves, in which both sides develop their pieces, castle, and establish their pawn structure. The opening sets the strategic framework for the middlegame. Thousands of opening systems have been analysed and classified in the ECO system.
