Chess Terms : Opposition Explained

Opposition

The opposition is a crucial endgame concept in which two kings stand on the same file, rank, or diagonal with an odd number of squares between them. The player who does NOT have to move holds the opposition and gains a positional advantage—the ability to outflank the opponent's king. The opposition is fundamental to pawn endgame technique.
