Pawn Structure

Pawn structure (or pawn skeleton) is the configuration of pawns on the board. Since pawns are the least mobile pieces and can never retreat, the pawn structure is relatively permanent and fundamentally shapes the strategic character of a position—determining which pieces are effective, where attacks can be launched, and which squares are strong or weak.
