What is Tempo?
Chess Terms : Tempo Explained
A tempo (plural: tempi) is a unit of time measured in moves. A player who achieves a position in fewer moves than the opponent has "gained a tempo." Conversely, making an unnecessary move "loses a tempo." Tempi are crucial in the opening (where rapid development is essential) and in the endgame (where a single tempo can determine promotion races or zugzwang).
