Always on the look out for ways to lower the tone of the blog
this week I’ve stooped into the world of cringe worthy puns.
‘Anything You Can Do - I Can Do Better’ is a song from the
musical ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ and having failed miserably
to get an ‘Alekhine Get Your Gun’ Red Hot Pawn game to suit
that pun I lowered my sights and aimed at a game by Carisa Yip.
C. Yip - S. Foisor, Saint Louis, USA 2017
Easily winning White slipped up. 59. f6 Qb5+ 60. Qxb5 g6 Checkmate
.
Although only 14 when this game was played two years later Carisa became
the highest rated female in the USA and at the age of 10 became, at that time,
the youngest female player to beat a Grandmaster. So already a good player,
in fact a very good player and an excellent never ever relax lesson for us old dogs.
And now to prove; ’...RHP can do anything better than Yip.’
Raaka - antonioromao RHP 2012
White won a pawn 30. Qe8+ Kh7 31. Qxf7 but 31...Rxf1+ 32. Kxf1 Qd1
Black has won a King.
webco1 - HfrMine antiperso RHP 2012
White played 79 Ke8 and resigned before Black replied with 79...Qf7 mate.
villainll - papalazaro RHP 2018
White, for some obscure reason, played 48. Kh3 Qh1 checkmate.
the7tidlys - rdhopeca RHP 2021
White played 48. d7 Qb8 checkmate.

C. Bernard - C. Adrian, French CH. 1986 (Check all Checks!)
White played 31.a5 and a draw was agreed. Was there a better White move?
K. Nogerbek - H. Wafa, World Rapid 2025
(A similar mistake as in the previous puzzle.)
What happened when Black took the b3 pawn.
G. Mikheeva - M. Alekseenko, Russian Chess Crown .2026
Black captured the a2 pawn allowing their Bishop to be trapped.
thinking 1...Bxa2 2.b3 Bxb3 3.cxb3 Rxd3 is OK. is this Correct?
A fourth puzzle. One I made up for the kids. White to play.

Last Blog I said after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6
4. O-O Nxe4 5. Re1 Nd6 6. Nc3 Nxb5 7. Nxe5 reaching this position
“Lasker gives some well known play after 7...Nxe5 8.Rxe5+ Be7 9.Nd5
I later realised that this ‘...well known play’ will not be well known to everyone so
apologies there for neglecting my duty to inform, educate, amuse and...er...insult.
Ludwig Bachmann - Max Fiechtl, Germany 1886
