Anything Yip Can Do RHP Can Do Better

Only Chess

‘Anything You Can Do - I Can Do Better’ is a song from the
musical ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ and having failed miserably
to get an ‘Alekhine Get Your Gun’ Red Hot Pawn game to suit
that pun I lowered my sights and aimed at a game by Carisa Yip.

So a mistake by Carisa Yip and four mistakes of the same ilk by RHP players.
Then we get three puzzles and a fourth I made up for the kids I coach to solve.

White to play and win.

Finally an add on from last weeks blog where I
missed out a couple of variations worth knowing

A link to;'Annie Get Your Gun- Anything you can do I can do better'

Without a doubt one of the best acted out songs from any film.

First of all: Thank you for the link. I only knew the german version up to now...

Then I actually did look at the games and found the typo you have hidde in the webco1 game: It is Ke8 not Kf8 😉

And being of the same depostion I think I know what happened in the Villain II game: They looked for a check, then the looked at advancng the pawn, saw that they needed the Kiong's support and didn't check the possible checks after the move... In plain words: It seemed like a good idea at the moment.

@Ponderable

Corrected ' thank you.
Not a great musical fan but a few of the routines I like.
Singing in the Rain, the Rooftop 'America' and of
course 'Officer Krupke' from the original West Side Story.

@greenpawn34

For once I solved all the puzzles! Except the last one. The one for kids.
It seems my intelligence has yet to reach "kid" level. I think I am still at new-born baby level with my chess!

Thank you once again for your entertaining blog posts!

@Wyn-Davies

The one for kids. 5 out of 12 got it. When I was composing it, here.

I was not slipping in the 6.Qc8+ first when going over it and it was getting
messy with 6. Qxa6+ Kf5 7. Qf6+ Kg4 8. Qxg6 Kg3 and this bunch love
trying everything and squeezing a position bone dry.

When in front of a demo board or circled by kids when you are showing them
something on a chess board it is important you per-empt their questions and suggestions,
if you have missed a cute trick in the position or plausible variation the chances are they will spot it,
So 6.Qc8+ cuts out all the tries and makes your task easier without getting side tracked,
