Let's go down memory lane a bit. First, remember Biden's speeches during his campaign encouraging asylum seekers to come to the US. You can go find the quotes if you want but the message was basically "If you want some asylum you should come.", and they did.

Then, on Biden's inauguration day in January 2021 he stopped building the border wall, leaving something like $300 million of materials rusting in the desert, eventually wasting a billion or two more paying contractors not to build the wall. He also killed "Remain in Mexico", and paused deportations for 100 days.

In his first 100 days Biden took 94 executive actions on immigration, the bulk of which were aimed at undoing Trump's executive actions. You can read all about it at the Biden friendly Migration Policy Institute, which called all these crazy actions "accomplishments."

Among the "accomplishments" (I had AI bullet point this for me):
* Narrower ICE enforcement. ICE was told to focus only on three groups: national security risks, people who entered on or after November 1, 2020, and public safety threats with certain criminal convictions or gang ties. Arresting anyone else required a supervisor's approval. ICE arrests fell more than 60%, Detentions fell by more than two-thirds.

* Ended most of Trump's travel and visa restrictions.

* Expanded Temporary Protected Status

* Made immigration benefits easier to get, including dropping Trump's public-charge rule, which had counted likely future use of public benefits against green card applicants.

The article notes March 2021 had the most border interceptions since March 2001. That included a record of nearly 19,000 unaccompanied children, nearly 53,000 people in families (the third-highest ever), and nearly 97,000 single adults (the most since at least 2013).

And so a blatantly engineered crisis was on, over the objections of people who knew better. Does anyone remember Rodney Scott, the border patrol chief at the start of the Biden admin? He warned them. They fired him. Here's a snip from his letter to the Senate after he was forced out:

The experienced civil service staff within CBP, ICE and DHS have provided multiple options to reduce the illegal entries and reestablish some semblance of border security through proven programs and consequences, yet every recommendation has been summarily rejected. Secretary Mayorkas is choosing to ignore the sound recommendations of career government leadership despite his own admissions that he agrees with them. Of grave concern, is the fact that the Secretary and other political appointees within DHS have provided factually incorrect information to Congressional Representatives and to the American public. Furthermore, they have directed USBP personnel to allow otherwise ineligible aliens to remain in the U.S. inconsistent with the CDC Title 42 Order, established legal processes and law. The professional staff within DHS is left perplexed, wondering who is really in charge and what the objective is.

Let's also remember all the gas lighting and outright lies from Mayorkas as the crisis unfolded which ultimately led to his impeachment (not conviction, unfortunately).

So with the engineered crisis in full swing, Biden starts claiming he can't solve his own mess without action from Congress. And eventually, when the crap Uniparty bill didn't pass, and the optics were so bad for Democrats with all the craziness at the border and elsewhere, what did Biden do? After claiming he couldn't act without Congress, in June of 2024, he used executive authority to curtail asylum claims, without Congress. Exactly what you're all pissed at Trump for doing.

A question you skipped earlier: if border is really so bad, why didn't Republicans pass a bill when they controlled all branches of Congress? Isn't it the Republican's fault they chose to rely on temporary executive orders?

Almost 10 years later, Republicans still control all branches of Congress and refuse to sign a bill.

Isn't this proof Republicans aren't really worried about the border? Isn't this proof it's just a political tool to them after they blocked a bi-partisan bill from Biden and refused to even discuss changes?

Seems your side is worried they'll have nothing to campaign on if the border's fixed for good.

Look at your long post just before this one. You outlined all the changes Biden made because executive order was used instead of a bill.

Is the country in a crisis or not? If it is, why *wouldn't* you want to pass a bill instead of leaving security up to a next the president?

Executive orders can be turned over by the next president. Passing a bill is more long term.

You'd think for an "emergency" Republicans would want a long term solution by passing a bill instead of leaving it up to a president who's legal term ends in 2 years.

There's clearly no sense of urgency by Republicans to make sure borders are secured based on their actions.
