While it's true that how much money the US and Canada rake in with their respective tariff regimes may not come out exactly the same (it probably won't), the point is that it's likely to be not far off the mark. Tariff revenue is collected by governments, and the Canadian government is prepared to pass its revenue on to those businesses that are losing export revenue becaus ...[text shortened]... ot even with yourself.

The trade imbalance. Yes, there is one between Canada and the US. Is it Canada's fault that the US buys more Canadian stuff than the reverse? How would you propose fixing that?
We aren't talking about business here, and the normal transactions that occur between businesses. A Business X doesn't threaten a Business Y with punitive measures because X is buying more of Y's stuff than the reverse. You're mysteriously confused on this matter. Governments are not businesses, and cannot be run like businesses.
Governments can make deals, sure, but Trump has proven more times than I care to count that he's a terrible deal-maker. The absolute worst. He's childish, quick to anger, jerked about by knee-jerk passions, easily duped by misinformation, changes his mind constantly, reneges on deals continually, bargains in bad faith, and hurls insults that only make him look truly, microscopically small.
Canada told Trump to go screw, and now he's having a temper tantrum about it. Canada knows that there is no appeasing Trump, and that any deal they might make, however generous to the US, would just go out the window after a minute or two.
See, this is the corner Trump's lying and bad faith over the years have trapped him in. Deals are built, first and foremost, on trust. No one trusts Trump anymore. Everyone is just running out the clock, waiting for him to drop dead, resign, get booted out of office, or be termed out. The clock is ticking.

How much more difficult is that now that li'l Donnie gets his feelings hurt by not enough attention from Canada and so he throws a fit that results in LESS business being done. One would think that you, in wanting MORE business to be done, would like there to be NO punitive tariffs being assessed.
